Doctoral candidate Xunchang Fei, Civil and Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering, has been awarded a scholarship by The Environmental Research and Education Foundation, a charity that funds and directs scientific research and educational initiatives for waste management practices to benefit industry participants and their communities. Fei’s research targets impacts to the municipal solid waste biodegradation process before and after landfilling.

Gavin LaRose, lecturer IV and Instructional Technology Program manager, Department of Mathematics, is the recipient of the Haimo Award from the Mathematics Association of America. The award honors college or university teachers who have been widely recognized as extraordinarily successful and whose teaching effectiveness has been shown to have had influence beyond their own institutions.

Yi Lu Murphey, professor and chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Fellow is the highest membership level in the society and recognizes Murphey’s contributions to optimal energy control in hybrid electric vehicles.

Khaled Mattawa, associate professor and author of four books of poetry, has been elected to a six-year term on the Academy of American Poets 15-member board. Previous chancellors include W.H. Auden, Marianne Moore and John Ashbery. Founded 80 years ago, the academy is a nonprofit organization that publishes a biannual literary journal and sponsors numerous readings and other events.

Erik Mueggler, professor of anthropology, affiliated with the Center for Chinese Studies and the Interdepartmental Doctoral Program in Anthropology and History, has been awarded Julian Steward Prize by The Anthropology & Environment Society for his book “The Paper Road: Archive and Experience in the Botanical Exploration of West China and Tibet” (University of California Press).

Jun Ni, professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Shien-Ming Wu Manufacturing Research Center, has received an International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the People’s Republic of China, the highest honor given to foreigners in the field of science and technology. The award ceremony was Jan. 10 in Beijing. Jun has promoted cooperation between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and U-M by establishing a world-class international institute.
