David C. Michener, associate curator, Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, received the American Public Gardens Association’s 2014 Professional Citation award at the association’s recent annual meeting in Denver. The award recognizes significant achievements in public horticulture of an APGA member who has excelled in one of the disciplines generally associated with public gardens such as botany, horticulture, gardening, conservation, research, education, extension, development or administration. The nominee should embody great skills, innovation and potential.

Lennard Fisk, the Thomas M. Donahue Distinguished University Professor of Space Science, professor of atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences, College of Engineering, and professor of physics, LSA, recently became the first American to be elected president of The Committee on Space Research. It is the top international society for promoting space science. Fisk’s responsibility during his upcoming four years as president is to promote international cooperation.

Mercedes Pascual

Mercedes Pascual, Rosemary Grant Collegiate Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, was recently presented with the Robert T. MacArthur Award by the Ecological Society of America. Pascual was recognized for contributions to the theory of food web structure; studies of the ecology, spread and evolution of infectious diseases; and the development and application of novel computational methods for relating climate to disease. She was also recognized for fostering diversity of ecological researchers and mentoring junior researchers.
